Matariki on the Waterfront Returns to Silo Park for 2015 Celebrations
Waterfront Auckland is thrilled to announce a plethora of activities and entertainment celebrating the final weekend of Matariki Festival, with Matariki on the Waterfront. A community event for friends and family, the weekend of July 17th, 18th and 19th is set to be the the single largest Matariki celebration in the country.
Matariki on the Waterfront is returning to Silo Park for its fourth year, marking the end of a month of exciting activities as Matariki is seen low in the north-east sky. It's the ideal culmination to a magnificent and exceptional festival, celebrating our unique Māori tikanga (customs).
In 2014, the combined weekend of events in Silo Park drew a crowd of more than 25,000 visitors to the waterfront, and this year is set to be even bigger and brighter. Silo Park will be lit up with asensory exploration of art and film, complete with sparkling music and performances, the Mighty Matariki Markets in full swing with Māori food and craft offerings.
Kicking off on Friday 17th of July with Art & Sound at Silo Park, light and projection-based artists will collectively transform Silo Park space magical with moving image and light from 5pm until late. Meanwhile, traditional Māori art activities will take place within Silo 6 while food trucks, local DJs and the red container bar keep things buzzing. Saturday 18th of July sees the Mighty Matariki Markets running from 12 noon until 5pm. These expanded Matariki-themed markets will be making a return for the 2015 celebrations, with the largest selection of arts, crafts and street food ever offered in Silo Markets, accompanied by the stylings of popular local DJs. There will be a strong emphasis on Māori food and craft offerings in this market, operating all afternoon in the regular Silo Markets format.
On Sunday 19th of July, The Mighty Matariki Markets get things rolling once again at 12 noon until 5pm. Alongside the Mighty Matariki Markets, a selection of vibrant local performers, artists and hit-makers will bring an awesome afternoon of community music and dance at Silo Park.
Matariki on the Waterfront is a chance to recognise and acknowledge New Zealand’s most significant indigenous celebration in Auckland's idyllic urban waterfront location, Silo Park, complete with awesome entertainment, food, art and craft offerings.
Entry to all Matariki on the Waterfront events are completely free.
