WTF? Time for a nutritional re-think
Heard the one about the Fat Professor, the Whole Food dietician and the Michelin-trained Chef who wanted to change the
world?
No joke this one – they’ve just published a confronting new book that challenges current nutritional convention, and
offers delicious new solutions to the obesity epidemic so prevalent today.
“What The Fat?” (WTF?), the new all Kiwi-produced recipe and guide book about to be launched in Auckland tonight, both
tackles the present-day health mess by exposing the fallacy behind our institutionalised and uber-commercialised food
practices, and provides balanced and easy-to-understand guidelines and recipes as an alternative.
A joint venture between Professor of Public Health Grant Scofield, dietician and whole-food advocate Dr Caryn Zinn and
Auckland restauranteur and chef Craig Rodger, WTF? effectively flips the food pyramid - exploding the myth of our
50-year love affair with high-carb-low fat diets, while demonstrating the enormous benefits of a healthy new lifestyle
option: Low Carb-Healthy Fat (LCHF).
Emeritus Professor Tim Noakes (University of Cape Town) probably says it best in the book’s foreword when he writes
about how the United States Department of Agriculture, in 1977, reinvented the way most people thought about food –
demonising fat and prescribing increased intakes of carbohydrate.
“The immediate result is that we are fatter and more diabetic than at any other time in human history… Industrial,
processed food is what the majority of us now eat”.
WTF? not only explains the science behind the LCHF lifestyle sweeping the world, it provides guides on which types of
food to avoid; which to embrace and the reasons for that – as well as offering a comprehensive range of illustrated
recipes showcasing real, whole food.
Prof Schofield (The Fat Professor) said he felt duty-bound to share with people both the futility of the currently
accepted nutritional norms, and the promise of LCHF.
“As a scientist, I believe it’s my job to be curious, to investigate other possibilities and be willing to change my
mind,” he says.
“Well, the preceding generation gave us a food pyramid that was fundamentally flawed, and we really need to be
challenging that.
“By following, and understanding the advice in WTF? and committing to an LCHF lifestyle, we can help halt the obesity
epidemic and reverse our own expanding waistlines.”
