The 39 Steps returns
Stagecraft is bringing back the smash hit comedy, The 39 Steps, after sell-out Wellington seasons in 2009 and 2010.
Featuring four actors and nearly 100 roles, Patrick Barlow’s play adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic spy film is a
madcap romp with lightning fast quick-changes.
Tanisha Wardle who plays over a dozen of the roles says the show has been hugely demanding but hugely fun to rehearse.
“It’s been a bit like learning a dance,” says Tanisha.
“Because I play up to three characters in some scenes, you have to rely on the muscle memory of being in the right place
at the right time. Then the characters just come.”
To add to the confusion, and the hilarity, the smaller roles range in accent from Scottish highlands – and lowlands, to
cockney and northern English; their gender switches throughout and the actors even get to play the furniture.
Director Shannon Tubman says it’s a great play for people who may not normally be into theatre.
“This show has been on the West End for years now and it remains one of Time Out magazines top picks for a fun night
out,” says Shannon.
“I want people to give this a try – I’m sure they’ll leave with a smile because this is just pure, unadulterated
entertainment.”
