The Spirit of Manawatu’s Club Q Lives on After Its Closure

The Spirit of Manawatu’s Club Q Lives on After Its Closure

MaLGRA and THE DARK ROOM proudly present DELIGHTFUL DIVAS, an evening of drag for one night only, performed by local drag queens formally of Club Q in Palmerston North.

Club Q, the local LGBT bar that closed earlier this year was part of MaLGRA (Manawatu Lesbian & Gay Rights Association), which is run by a group of local volunteers. Club Q provided a safe space for the local Glittfab community to hold social events, including quiz nights and drag nights.

MaLGRA has now moved into Room 203 at Square Edge and have restructured the way they operate to adapt with their new surroundings, offering social support groups, information, and advice to anyone who may be questioning their sexuality or gender, or knows someone who is. MaLGRA is the longest running gay organisation in New Zealand and their main aim is to provide a safe space for its community.

Producer of Delightful Divas, Andrew Leipst says “with the loss of Club Q, we have had to find a new venue for our drag shows and we’re happy and excited to be performing at The Dark Room.”

The team for this show is made up of local drag queens and one drag king, all have previously been seen on stage at Club Q. They love what they do and give their time freely to raise funds for MaLGRA in support of what the organisation has done and continues to do for Manawatu’s LGBT community.

Delightful Divas features music from the 80’s and 90’s and the queens are sure to thrown in their own brand of humour and frivolity. This is a celebration of pride for Manawatu’s LGBT community and all of its supporters (no matter what gender, sexuality, race, religion, etc.) are welcome. Funds raised go to MaLGRA to assist with associated costs of their new space.
