Anika Moa and Julia Deans join forces with the CSO
It’ll be a triumphant homecoming for two Canterbury rock divas when Julia Deans and Anika Moa join forces with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra this June.
Rock Divas is a celebration of the friendship between the two rock and pop stars who, between them, have a vast array of hits such as Lydia, Modern Fables, Dreams In My Head and Mother, and who will be taking the stage with their hometown orchestra to perform old favourites and songs from their new projects.
“I’m looking forward to teaming up with both Anika and the CSO again,” said Julia. “It is such a rare and precious thing to sing with an orchestra, and to share that experience with one of my favourite humans in our home town… I’m feeling pretty spoilt, to be honest.”
With multiple nominations for prestigious musical awards to her name, she is currently working on the final touches of her new album We Light Fire, due to be released this year.
Anika released her latest album, Queen at the Table, earlier this year and has recently starred in the New Zealand Herald’s web series Face to Face with Anika Moa.
After rising to fame in 2002, she has been hailed by critics as having an “effortless, crystal-clear voice [and] an approach that mixes electro-pop, ethereal electronica and soulful R 'n B” (Shane Gilchrist, Otago Daily Times, 20 April 2015) and continuing to produce “music of a bewitching standard” (Tom Cardy, stuff.co.nz, 24 April 2015).
“I can't wait to do my second show ever with the orchestra and the amazing Julia Deans,” said Anika. “The CSO will breathe a different wonder and life into our songs and that breath will be heard. Ka mau Te wehi Te ha o kaiwaiata (The breath of music is wondrous)!”
Conducted by Hamish McKeich in the recently-restored Isaac Theatre Royal, this promises to be an incredible musical journey celebrating old friendships and looking forward to the future.
