World of WearableArt™ Exhibition to Open in Australia
WOW, The World of WearableArt Exhibition is set to open in Townsville, North Queensland on May 29th. The Perc Tucker Regional Gallery will present the first overseas showing of the exhibition which was recently hosted for four months by Auckland War Memorial Museum. During that time 135,000 people visited the exhibit.
The exhibition has three distinct sections, the first features 32 garments from the permanent WOW collection including five Supreme Winners and many section winners from the last 12 years. There is also a workroom for visitors to the exhibition to try their hand at designing a piece of wearable art. The third element is an audio visual presentation that give audiences a small taste of the annual WOW Awards Show.
Founding Director Dame Suzie Moncrieff who heads WOW’s creative team and who curated the exhibition is very excited to see it leave for Australia. “It has been a long-held dream of mine to take WOW to the world and the exhibition allows us to do just that. We look forward to inspiring all who come to view these amazing works of wearable art, created by designers from around the world and to encourage people to enter the WOW Awards in New Zealand.”
Perc Tucker Regional Gallery Director Shane Fitzgerald is gearing up for the exhibition “What a coup for Townsville and a wonderful cultural experience for Queensland. I have been a keen observer of the WOW phenomenon over the past decade and to be able to showcase the breathtaking garments and the explosion of creativity that WOW brings, here in our own backyard, is sure to inspire audiences throughout our region and beyond.
The exhibition at the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery in Townsville will be on display until 12th July after which it will leave for the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, Hawai’i. The exhibition has been developed in partnership with the New Zealand Government though Major Events and will move to is expected to remain on tour in the USA until 2018.
Tickets are now on sale for the Wellington-based World of WearableArt Awards show which runs over 14 nights in September and October 2015.
