New Zealand Post coin celebrates new Royal arrival

New Zealand Post coin celebrates new Royal arrival

5 May, 2015

The birth of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's second child is being commemorated by a New Zealand Post limited edition 1oz silver proof coin.

One thousand of the coins will be minted and will have a design of the New Zealand silver fern and the English rose intertwined on the rim, with the centre of the coin depicting a traditional baby’s carriage with the birth date of the baby.

The design has been approved by Buckingham Palace.

New Zealand Post Head of Stamps and Coins Simon Allison said the decision to mint the coin reflects the huge affection Kiwis have towards the Royal couple and the close relationship New Zealand has with the Monarchy as a member of the Commonwealth.

The new coin complements the coin New Zealand Post minted to mark the birth of Prince George in 2013, which sold out quickly. That coin incorporated a stylised koru – a pattern used in Māori art to symbolise new life.

The coin is available for pre-order at nzpost.co.nz/coins Delivery of the coins is anticipated in July.

Note: New Zealand Post is authorised by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand as the only official issuer of legal tender New Zealand commemorative coins.
