Māori Television to Screen Auckland First XV Rugby
Māori Television has entered
into a partnership with the Auckland Rugby Union to
broadcast Auckland’s 1st XV rugby competition on
free-to-air television.
Each week, the channel will
screen an exclusive replay of the Match of the Round from
the prestigious 1A competition in The Rugby Show, which will
air on Sundays at 12.30pm from May 3.
Māori Television Head of Content Mike Rehu says the development follows the growing popularity of secondary schools rugby.
“This is one of toughest schoolboy rugby competitions in the world and it has a huge following who will now be able to watch the games from the comfort of their homes.
“We are
excited to provide a free-to-air platform for future
superstars of New Zealand rugby.”
Auckland Rugby Chief
Executive Andy Dalton is delighted to have gained the
support of Māori Television.
“We have been extremely pleased with the enthusiasm that the rugby community has shown for our new initiative around the streaming of the Unitec 1A competition, and are equally excited to have secured Māori Television as a free-to-air partner for our weekly Match of the Round.
“The opportunity to build an audience and to bring new viewers to Māori Television is fantastic.”
The Rugby Show will screen at 1pm every Sunday from May 10 and will include a full replay of the competition’s Match of the Round. The first match will air on Sunday May 3 at 12.30pm with St Peter’s College taking on Auckland Grammar.
