Exploring Timor-Leste
Exploring Timor-Leste is the first exhibition in Wellington of craft, photographs, paintings and stories from Timor-Leste (East Timor).
From May 6 – 10 at the Thistle Hall Gallery, 293 Cuba Street, Wellington.
10am – 6pm. Free admission.
Contact Sue Chamberlain on 021 633 566 or email suechamberlain14@gmail.com for more details.
Exploring Timor-Leste is an exhibition of craft, photographs, paintings and stories from Timor-Leste (East Timor). It shows not only traditional life, but also how Timor-Leste is developing today. And it tells stories of individuals and organisations from New Zealand who have worked alongside the Timorese people for the last sixteen years.
Timor-Leste is one of the world’s newest and smallest nations. It sits at the crossroads of Pacific and Asia. We invite Wellingtonians to visit the exhibition to find out more about one of our neighbours.
On exhibit will be weaving (known as tais), basket ware, photographs, paintings and stories about the connection between New Zealand and Timor-Leste.
Throughout the exhibition we’ll also run a slide show of Timor-Leste and a video, ‘Summer in Timor-Leste’.
Some items will be for sale, and funds raised will be sent to people and projects in Timor-Leste. Please bring cash or cheques because we can’t process eftpos or credit card transactions.
The exhibition is organised by the Friends of Timor-Leste who say, “The exhibition will be a chance for Wellingtonians who have a connection with Timor-Leste to show their friends and family what Timor-Leste is like today, and to meet each other. We also hope it’ll be a chance for the Timorese in Wellington to meet a few more Wellingtonians.”
On Saturday and Sunday these presentations about Timor-Leste will run:
Sat 9 May 11am Amber Kale will talk about her experiences volunteering in Timor-Leste and what inspired her paintings, which are on exhibit.
Sat 9 May 2pm Timorese people who are studying in Wellington will perform music from Timor-Leste.
Sun 10 May 11am Sue Chamberlain, who worked for the Red Cross in Timor-Leste for three years, will talk about the work of the Timorese Red Cross and a little about language in Timor-Leste.
Sun 10 May 2pm Dr Brendon Bowkett will present the video ‘Timor Summer to Vivaldi – a spiritual reflection’. He was inspired to make the video during the many years he has spent helping to provide medical services in Timor-Leste.
