100 years ago, a Bell Tea one-pound tin packed to the brim with mementos, practical items and notes from home was a beacon of hope for the 100,000 New Zealanders who went to war.
A century on, to commemorate this historic anniversary and celebrate the importance of connection, Bell Tea has recreated 50,000 of its special one-pound tea tins with the hope that they will spark new connections with loved ones near and far.
The one-pound tea tins became iconic during wartime by virtue of their size and sturdiness. To keep families connected through the difficult times, the New Zealand war time government announced a special concession rate for parcels sent to our people serving abroad. The rate was applied to parcels of a particular size and these dimensions perfectly aligned with The Bell Tea one-pound tin.
The tins became so popular, they reportedly identified the presence of New Zealanders on the front lines.
Bell Tea CEO Mark Hamilton says, “This tin carries with it a rich story and heritage – it was a vehicle to send loved ones hope, messages from home and reminders that while they might have been far, far away, they were cherished and loved. The tin holds a special place in history and we are proud that our tins facilitated these connections a hundred years ago.”
“In today’s world, where loved ones are spread all across the world for work, travels, adventures and more, staying connected is so important. We would love to see the tins being used, once again, to connect loved ones around the world because even after 100 years, the key message this tin carries hasn’t changed, it’s still all about connection and care.” he adds.
To further honour the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli, Bell Tea is a supporter of the Fields of Remembrance Trust, which was established to honour those who served and fought for our nation during World War One. The company has worked alongside the Trust in developing the tin and Vice Chairman, Graham Gibson, says that bringing the century-old tin to life in conjunction with Bell has been a pleasure.
“We are thrilled to have Bell Tea on board this journey of commemoration. Bell Tea has a unique connection to WW1, as a supplier of home comforts to those brave New Zealanders who left our shores and fought in WW1.”
The Bell Tea one-pound tins will be available at
supermarkets across the country, as a gift with purchase
