Oxford Public Meeting TPPA on Wednesday 15th April
Oxford Public Meeting TPPA on Wednesday 15th April 2015, 7pm to 9pm.
'It’s Our Future Christchurch' is holding a Public Meeting to discuss the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) in Oxford. The TPPA is a trade agreement the government is currently negotiating with the US and 11 other Pacific Rim countries.
Gen de Spa, organiser of the Christchurch group, said this is a conversation she feels the government should be organizing in every community in Aotearoa. The ambition of this meeting is to provide a safe forum to discuss questions people have about the TPPA and an opportunity to listen and understand different perspectives.
There is growing concern the non-trade chapters of the TPPA could threaten many areas of the New Zealand way of life. However the parts involving trade could be seen as a positive for the country de Spa says. “We need to hear each other’s concerns and values and look at what we know about this deal in order to gauge the cost/benefits for the country as a whole. Now it is time for us to get together and talk about the future of our country.”
As awareness is growing, de Spa says people are curious to know and understand more. “We need to open this discussion up to the wider community. The Oxford meeting is another step to raise awareness and to reach those who are keen to be informed.”
