Leading Auckland School Choirs Join Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir For Concert in May

Two of Auckland’s top school choirs will perform alongside one of Europe’s leading choirs when they visit the city in May.

The King’s School Chapel Choir and King’s College’s premier choir ‘All The King’s Men’ will open the Auckland concert of the Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell, Auckland on Sunday 3 May.

Cathedral choirs and their choir schools are among some of the oldest European musical traditions and Denmark’s Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir is rated as one of the finest in Europe with prestigious journal Le Figaro placing them alongside the Vienna Boys Choir and King’s College Choir in Cambridge, England.

In Denmark, the 46-strong choir including 30 boys aged 13-16 years, performs at major state and royal occasions and featured at the wedding of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary in 2004, and at the christening of their children.

Auckland’s King’s School has a proud tradition of music and singing and the King’s School Chapel Choir last year won ‘gold’ at the Auckland region Kids’ Sing competition.

‘All The King’s Men’ is King’s College’s premier male-voice choir. Formed in 2012, it has been a finalist each year in the 'The Big Sing’ - New Zealand's secondary school's choir festival, gaining silver awards at each competition.

The programme for the concert with the Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir includes Adiemus by Karl Jenkins performed by the combined King’s School Chapel Choir and All The King’s Men; Andrew Lloyd Webber’s well-known Pie Jesu (Arr. John Leavitt), performed by King’s School Chapel Choir; andSanctus from German Mass No. 2 by Franz Schubert, performed by All The King’s Men.
The Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir performance features the works of Carl Nielsen, Morten Lauridsen and Palestrina.

Director and conductor Ebbe Munk says the concerts will span the Renaissance to modern times – “from deep reflection to exuberant joy and eternal light. This is a celebration of sublime choral music”.

The Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir concert in Auckland is part of a five centre tour with concerts also being performed in Dunedin, Wanaka, Nelson and Wellington. Tickets for the Auckland concert are available through iTicket www.iticket.co.nz or 0508 iTICKET (484 253).
