The Super Club and School Tournament held last weekend at the B Centre, Arena Manawatu, produced a high quality display of netball says
Netball Central Zone Community Netball Manager, Liz Page.
“The quality of netball was excellent given it’s a pre-season tournament,” explained Page. “There were some big scores, as you would expect, but also some very close competitive games. This was a great opportunity for clubs, schools, umpires and officials to prepare for the 2015 netball season.”
The Super Club final featured Wellington’s PIC club who faced a determined Rampage Tysons from Taranaki. PIC came into the final with wins over Naumai (PIC 40-28 Naumai), the Invitational Team (PIC 50-36 Invitational) and Otane (PIC 43-27 Otane).
Rampage Tysons also performed strongly beating off Massey A1 (Tysons 39-25 Massey), MAC (Tyson 48-23 MAC) and an injury-affected Manukura side (Tysons 39-31Manukura).
PIC defeated the Taranaki club by 10 clear points (PIC 35-25 Tysons) to regain the Super Club title they won last year. Runners-up Manukura pipped Otane for a third placing by two points (Manukura 42-40 Otane).
This was the first year that the weekend saw the inclusion of a Super Schools Tournament, featuring schools from the top 20 in the region. “The schools tournament has given the schools further incentive to make that top 20 placing,” said Page.
Wellington Girls secured the inaugural ‘Super School’ title, defeating Napier Girls 50-34 in the final. Wanganui High were placed third after they gained a 37-28 win over PNGHS.
“We’ve had some great feedback. Everyone was extremely positive and we're looking forward to holding the weekend next year. We’re extremely grateful for the support from Netball Manawatu Centre, who are a key partner in the weekend. The centre will be taking on a lead role in the event next year,” added Page.
