Lovecraft Ubu Night

Media Release

Free Theatre Christchurch presents:
Lovecraft Ubu Night

This week’s Ubu Night is inspired by American writer H.P. Lovecraft and his cosmic horror fiction. Lovecraft most famously said, “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.” Join Free Theatre on a journey into the unknown at The Gym in The Arts Centre this Friday the 13th, where “hidden and fathomless worlds of strange life in unholy dimensions which only the dead and the moonstruck can glimpse” and “insane shouts and harrowing screams, soul-chilling chants and dancing devil-flames” will threaten the sanity of anyone who dares to heed the Call of Cthulhu! Free entry from 6pm, but remember, “when we cross the line to the boundless and hideous unknown—the shadow-haunted Outside—we must leave our humanity—and terrestrialism at the threshold.” Lovecraft’s murky tales are sure to engage while Creole cuisine and early American Jazz and Folk will be there to lift the spirits.

Ubu Nights are a series of weekly entertainments (combining theatre, music, film and hospitality) that engage diverse communities in interactive and sensory experiences. Free Theatre collaborates on these Ubu Nights with Christchurch artists from different disciplines. The unique experience of contemporary performance is quite unlike anything on offer in Christchurch and is proving very popular with Neat Places describing Ubu Nights as “our new favourite thing to do on Friday nights”. Following the wonderfully successful debut of Ubu Nights late last year, these events provide hospitality with theatrical and musical performances.
