Local Food Network Announces Dates for Local Food Week 2015
16 February 2015 – Local Food Week, the week-long celebration of local food of the Wellington region, will take place
this year from Sunday, 1st March through Sunday, 8th March with community events around the region.
Autumn is the harvest season and offers ample opportunity to demonstrate how local food is delicious and accessible. The
Local Food Network hopes that Local Food Week will inspire more people in Wellington to either produce food themselves
or support local food through their purchasing choices.
This year, food projects, events and producers across the Wellington region will be represented in Local Food Network
sponsored events as well as events sponsored by like-minded organisations.
There’s something for everyone from a Seedling Swap and Share at the Island Bay Community Centre, to hearing from Wesley
Community Action in Cannons Creek, Porirua at the Launch Party, to participating in or being a spectator at the Local
Wild Food Challenge in Eastbourne.
Ania Upstill of the Local Food Network, the community group that organises Local Food Week said, “It’s amazing how much
is going on around the Wellington Region. This week is a fantastic opportunity to highlight all the many ways people can
get involved in local food.”
“New this year is the Urban Edibles Scavenger Hunt which kicks off the week. The hunt is a way to get both adults and
children aware of what is growing around Wellington with a bit of a game that concludes on that Friday. The Local Wild
Food Challenge, which has events all over the world, also happens during Local Food Week. It’s a great event to have
associated with the week as it adds more foraging and wild food from the region to the experience”, said Upstill.
For those wanting to learn more about many of the exciting local food projects currently growing in Wellington, the best
event to attend will be the Launch Party on Monday, 2nd March from 6 – 8pm at Sustainability Trust, 2 Forresters Lane.
The Pecha Kucha style event with feature a range of local speakers talking about what they’re doing around local food.
