Kiwi Comedian Joins Westies Gt Radial Limo Raising Funds for Kiwi Kids
Pulp Comedy regular Tarun Mohanbhai joins Variety Trillian Bash
The late great Westie comedian Ewen Gilmour loved his GT Radial limo, and it became a regular sight on the annual Variety Trillian Bash, touring the country raising funds for Variety – The Children’s Charity, and distributing grants to kids in need of a hand-up.
Often Gilmour roped in fellow comedians to the cause, and at his shoulder was a close group of mates, some of whom are determined to keep the GT Radial fundraising comedy roller-coaster going.
So Kiwi comedian, actor, writer and director Tarun Mohanbhai will clamber aboard to join the Bash, which departs New Plymouth on March 6 and travels to Wanganui and Ohakune, Waiouru and Wellington, Napier and Taupo, Rotorua and Tauranga, then Cambridge, to finish in Auckland on March 14.
The famous funny-man says helping a child in need is more of an obligation than a chore. “It sometimes amazes me that what we take for granted can mean so much for them.”
Tarun’s a stand-up veteran, having performed in New Zealand and Australia, South Africa, the USA and UK, among many others, but he’s new to the Bash format, which will visit over 21 schools and around 4500 kids along the route, and he may not be used to entertaining so many kids in such a short time – or to the crazy clowning around that goes on among the crews.
GT Limo Westies team captain Ed Finn is a veteran though. This will be his 12th Bash, with many previous Bashes aboard the 1993 stretch limo, with Petrolhead Magazine editor Al Davidson another regular returning this year. And while they’re still motivated by the smiles and happiness they sees in kids along the way, this year they’ll also be shaking fund-raising buckets and driving “in memory of our mate, Ewen.”
I’m sure the Westie team will do him proud.
