Rockstar Brings Unique Musical Art Exhibit to NZ

Paintings set to music? Or is that musically scored art? However you look at it, Serj Tankian, front man of System of a Down, wants you to be wowed and inspired. Upon arrival to the exhibit, guests are invited to download the free Eye For Sound App and scan the interactive art pieces with their smartphones.

Doing so unlocks unique musical accompaniment to each work of art, specifically composed for each piece (bringing along personal headphones is highly recommended). Guests thereby enjoy both music and art from Tankian and fellow musicians/artists including Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello (artwork by Scott Hepburn) and other local New Zealand artists, including Bic & Boh Runga, Shannon Novak, and Mardo El-Noor who have all composed their own music and created their own accompanying artworks for the exhibition.

Serj Tankian explains, “The urge came to me in the discovery that music has become so temporal and devalued in the world today, so I wanted to create an exclusive experience…” The Huffington Post called it, “upgrading the dynamic of art and audience.” Artist Direct said, “A ground-breaking experience merging visuals and audio like never before.”

Eye for Sound will be presented in the Silo 6 venue in the Wynyard Quarter, and is sponsored by Metro magazine and Asahi. Metro editor Simon Wilson says, “We’re excited about this show – it’s just the kind of thing that keeps pushing Aucklanders’ expectations of culture and performance. And we love that it’s in Silo 6 too – it’s the perfect venue for something so unusual.”

Asahi marketing manager Ben Shaw is equally enthusiastic, saying, “We're very excited to have Asahi involved with this cutting-edge fusion of art, music and technology. It's great that Asahi can help provide it free to the people of Auckland.”
