Jan Preston’s Boogie Circus Touring NZ next month
ROLL UP. Roll up. The circus is coming to town.
No animals will be harmed. There’ll be no grandstand seating nor tigers jumping through blazing hoops but there’ll be at least one cheeky monkey.
Acclaimed Sydney based pianist extraordinaire Jan Preston, with her new band Jan Preston’s Boogie Circus, announce today that they will embark on a concert tour of New Zealand next month, performing uplifting and entertaining boogie, blues, ragtime piano music and songs together with candid and often humorous anecdotes -- guaranteed to be more riotous than an elephant on the rampage!
Always entertaining and invigorating, Jan’s live shows continue to receive rapturous reviews as she thrills audiences throughout Australia, New Zealand and Europe.
Featuring her well known boogie, blues and ragtime piano music with the addition of guitar, bass and percussion, JAN PRESTON’S BOOGIE CIRCUS will melt your blues away with songs, instrumentals, candid and sometimes humorous anecdotes.
Known as Australia’s foremost female Boogie & Blues Piano player and singer, Jan delivers high-energy performances which, together with her candid and communicative personality, has given her longstanding popularity in Australasia and overseas.
Winner of 5
Music Awards, she plays festivals and concerts throughout
the world and writes music for films and television, such as
the music to her sister Gaylene Preston’s Film Home By
Christmas. On returning from New York in 1980, Jan formed NZ
band Coup D’Etat who had the No1 hit single, Dr I Like
Your Medicine.
Her latest CD My Life As A Piano is on ABC music and is available in ABC shops throughout Australia and Universal Music in NZ.
Jan has supported international acts such as the iconic Bo Diddley, and Grammy award winner Robert Cray, and her popular performance on ABC TV’s Spicks and Specks can be viewed on Youtube http://youtu.be/nxEE7QZLPQk
‘Jan Preston is surely Australia’s Queen of the Piano. She and the instrument come as a package and anyone who’s seen her perform live has witnessed a perfect partnership. Her playing is as flawless as it is loose and joyful’ Rhythms Magazine Australia
Jan’s earliest musical memories were of singalongs at the piano with one Aunt playing boogie/stride piano and another on violin. All the Prestons sang and played some instrument, even if it was only eggbeater or tea chest bass.
Born in Greymouth, Jan studied classical piano and singing from an early age, and always loved performing live.
The family moved to Napier and Jan went on to study at Auckland university, completing a classical piano music degree.
She then joined the infamous Red Mole Theatre troup in Wellington, toured NZ with Spilt Enz, and was musical director for the legendary and enormously popular Red Mole Cabaret shows in Wellington.
At this time she was asked by Sam Neil (then a film director) to write music for a documentary he was making, and Jan has been composing for films ever since.
In the late 1970s she moved briefly to New York where she heard many of the great r’nb piano players, came back to NZ and formed the rock/reggae band “Coup D’Etat”.
Jan is a fulltime composer, songwriter, and piano player who has specialized in mastering the piano boogie tradition, thus becoming known as Australasia’s “Queen of boogie piano.”
