Antarctica New Zealand seeks innovative proposals from media and art communities
As part of its Community Engagement Programme, Antarctica New Zealand is seeking innovative proposals from media and art communities interested in travelling to Antarctica during the 2015/16 summer season.
For more than 58 years, Antarctica New Zealand has been supporting scientific research, and collaborative media and artist programmes, on the frozen continent and in the Southern Ocean.
The Community Engagement Programme (formerly the Media Programme and Artists and Writers Programme) plays a crucial part in increasing the public's awareness of Antarctic science and our operations in Antarctica.
“We aim to support innovative Community Engagement proposals which align to Antarctica New Zealand's purpose; Inspiring people to connect with Antarctica, through knowledge and collaboration, and vision: Valued. Protected. Understood,” says Antarctica New Zealand Chief Executive Peter Beggs.
“It’s a rare privilege to be invited to one of the most unique regions on earth and to have the opportunity to immerse yourself in its story, science, history and grandeur. The opportunity comes with a serious objective: to engage with the science and translate its immense importance to New Zealanders,” says General Manager Marketing and Communications Jeanine Begg.
Through a competitive online solicitation process, this opportunity is extended to a wide range of media including but not limited to, journalists, news reporters, painters, illustrators, science or fiction writers, sculptors and photographers. The new selection criteria and process will ensure greater transparency around what it takes to be selected for travel to Antarctica.
“We are interested in fresh new ideas that demonstrate the applicant’s ability to engage with a variety of people,” says Ms Begg. “Of real value to the selection panel is the proposal's outreach capability.”
“We will also actively reward applicants who can demonstrate a genuine interest in Antarctica, scientific research and the environment through their past work.”
Antarctica New Zealand welcome applications from those who share their values, who understand the importance of the science supported in Antarctica, and are passionate about communicating that message to New Zealand.
