Auckland Rugby League to open Hall of Fame

Auckland Rugby League to open Hall of Fame

From this year on the Auckland Rugby League will present its legends with a unique honour, following the opening of the Auckland Rugby League Hall of Fame.

Six players will become the inaugural inductees on April 8, during a ceremony which coincides with the official opening of the 2015 Appliance Shed Fox Memorial Premiership.

The inductees will be selected by a panel of Auckland Rugby League stalwarts – ARL CEO John Ackland, ARL life member Ray Cranch, ARL president Gary Whittle and rugby league broadcaster Allen McLaughlin.

“The Hall of Fame is a way to recognise the contribution made to the game by a number of players over 106 years of rugby league in Auckland,” Ackland said.

“It’s appropriate that the first inductees will be announced at the launch of the Fox, a competition where all of the inductees would have made their name and become legends of our game.”

The Hall of Fame has detailed selection criteria, including the number of years playing club league in Auckland, the number of Fox Memorial finals played in and won, as well as games in Auckland representative sides.

Taking part in victories over touring sides, leadership, as well as crowd appeal and character are also taken into consideration during selection meetings.

An area of the ARL website will be dedicated to the Hall of Fame, serving as a library for those who want to learn about the feats and careers of the inductees.

It is envisaged that more players will be added on a biannual basis, with fans to get their say on future inductees.
