NEW HOME & NEW LOGO FOR DUNEDIN FRINGE
Big changes are afoot at the Dunedin Fringe Festival. Managed by a charitable trust, the Fringe revealed today that it
has relocated to 11 George Street; a stone’s throw from the Octagon and previous home to Gigatown Dunedin and the
National Bank. The Festival also revealed a new logo which will play a key role in freshening up this year’s branding.
The trust has been based in the Carnegie Centre for the past twelve years. The decision to move away was due to a need
for a larger public profile and more workspace.
“Visibility is important, we want more Dunedin locals and visitors to discover what Dunedin Fringe has to offer and it’s
hard to do that buried in a basement office,” said Festival Director, Josh Thomas.
On the suggestion of a colleague, Mr Thomas approached the Dunedin City Council’s City Property Manager, Kevin Taylor
with some ideas around how the vacant space could provide great opportunities for the Festival, the city’s artists and
its residents. “I explained that the situation would be a win-win; the Festival and its artists can boost their profile
and the Council can ensure a highly visible retail space has a dynamic and engaging street frontage,” said Mr Thomas.
Mr Taylor said he was impressed by the additional community outcomes the Festival was offering. “Mr Thomas offered
several initiatives that we saw could add significant value to the community,” said Mr Taylor. “These included a shared
community meeting space, a pop-up event front desk and an events window, all free of charge for arts and cultural
groups.”
The Festival’s new logo was designed by Laura Benjamin, a recent graduate of the Otago Polytechnic’s School of Design.
The logo will take a central role in the new look of this year’s Festival.
The Dunedin Fringe Festival will take place from 12th - 22nd March with the Polson Higgs Opening Night Showcase, launching the Festival on Wednesday 11th March at the Regent Theatre. The full programme will be released on Friday
13th February and ticket sales will also open on this date.
