Sculpture on the Gulf now open

The Precariats by Cushla Donaldson has been selected as the winner of the 2015 headland Sculpture on the Gulf Lexus Premier Award.

The award comes with a $30,000 prize and was chosen by independent judge Derrick Cherrie, Head of Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland.

“Judging for the Lexus Premier Award has been an extremely challenging task. Cushla Donaldson’s The Precariats is fresh, insightful and harmonises with its Waiheken environment. It is truly a remarkable sculpture”, says Derrick.

The piece can be viewed alongside 30 other sculptures at the 2015 headland Sculpture on the Gulf – a free outdoor sculpture exhibition set on the Matiatia headland on Waiheke Island, Auckland.

The two-kilometre costal walk is free to the public and open until Sunday 15 February.

It features contemporary sculptures from a diverse group of artists including Jeff Thomson, Virginia King, David McCracken and Elin&Keino.

The headland Pavilion is stationed at the end of the sculpture trail where chefs Ana Schwarz and Nico Fini provide a custom menu to showcase the best produce Waiheke has to offer. The food is complemented by a selection of local wines including Batch Winery, Kennedy Point Vineyard, Obsidian, Peacock Sky Vineyard and Goldie Wines.

There is also a selection of small sculptures visitors can view in the headland Pavilion Gallery.

Chair of the headland Sculpture on the Gulf board Margaret Malaghan welcomes everyone to New Zealand’s premier outdoor sculpture event.

“We have some remarkable sculptures on display, so we’re looking forward to seeing people make the most of the Waiheke sun while enjoying the work of New Zealand’s most talented sculptors. Congratulations to Cushla Donaldson for taking out the Lexus Premier Award.”
