Festival of Song Brings Selection of Music to Hawke’s Bay

The 2015 Festival of Song concert programme is presented in association with the Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation and showcases the talent of the 2015 IFAC HANDA New Zealand Singing School students, and features the 2015 Artist in Residence, Robert Tucker.

This concert programme accompanies the 2015 IFAC New Zealand Singing School, and gives singing students the opportunity to perform solo, in ensemble or in massed opera or music theatre choruses. Audiences have a broad selection or oratorio, classical, opera, music theatre and sometimes pop music to choose from.

“It’s an essential component of the student’s study at our 11 day school. The calibre is high and it is the perfect place to spot the ones to watch out for” says New Zealand Singing School Chairperson, Jill Tobin.

The students have only 11 days to refine and stage their musical items which are worked on extensively with the national and internationally acclaimed faculty of the school. The public performances are staged at venues around Hawke’s Bay. This year the programme will include a service at St John’s Cathedral in Napier, cabaret evenings at the Tabard Theatre in Napier, classical and opera at the Havelock North Function Centre in Havelock North and the Century Theatre at the newly refurbished MTG in Napier; and then the final Gala and Prizegiving concert which brings together the best of the best at the Napier Municipal Theatre in Napier.

“The standard is always impressive, and the final night Gala is an exciting energy-charged finale to the intense School programme and Festival of Song” says Jill Tobin.

In addition to the main concert programme, in-house concerts at the Eastern Institute of Technology are the student’s chance to take centre stage as a soloist in a supportive peer environment. These intimate concerts are an opportunity to see the students applying the teachings of the day, showcasing their learning. Audiences enjoy watching progress between the in-house concerts and the final Gala concert.

These concerts are held in the Wine Centre (Room 101) at the Eastern Institute of Technology in Taradale.

“The Festival of Song is becoming quite a fixture in the Hawke’s Bay calendar, and the support of the Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation has made it possible to book better venues, produce a better programme and advertise more widely. The students deserve a good audience, and they certainly deliver” says Jill Tobin.
