Auckland Deaf Society joins the national #GivingTuesdayNZ
movement to encourage spending with a purpose
Auckland: 2 December 2014
Auckland Deaf Society has joined #GivingTuesday New Zealand, a campaign to create a national day of giving at the start
of the annual holiday season.
A first of its kind effort in Aotearoa, #GivingTuesday campaign aims to encourage Kiwis to give back to their
communities and transform how people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season.
#GivingTuesday was officially launched in the USA in 2012 as a new national day of giving. In the first year the
campaign saw an increase of over $5million USD donated to one major donation website alone, compared to the same Tuesday
the year prior.
This year, the campaign has gone global. In addition to New Zealand, GivingTuesday is taking place in the USA, Canada,
New Zealand, Mexico and Australia, among other countries.
Auckland Deaf Society President, John Schischka, says he is pleased the organization has joined #GivingTuesdayNZ.
“I believe it is a great concept that will inspire people to take collaborative action to improve their local
communities, give back in better, smarter ways to the causes they support.
Auckland Deaf Society’s unique #GivingTuesdayNZ campaign will harness the power of social media by calling its local
community, businesses and supporters to take an ‘unselfie’ photo explaining why they are supporting ADS and posting it
to their social media profiles and tagging in #AucklandDeafSociety and #GivingTuesday. They also can make a donation via
the Auckland Deaf Society Give-a-little page.
