Take an #unselfie and #giveitupforccf on #GivingTuesday NZ

To help celebrate #GivingTuesday tomorrow (2 December) the Child Cancer Foundation is asking Kiwis to be part of a national effort to help take the stress out of Christmas for families with children going through cancer treatment.

The #giveitupforccf movement aims to get 1,000 people from throughout the country to participate. It is part of the international fundraising movement, #GivingTuesday, where people around the world give back to charity.

Child Cancer Foundation National Manager Commercial Jo Rodgers says its social media campaign is asking people to donate the $5 they may have spent on their morning coffee, lunch, a treat or entertainment to assist the Foundation’s work.

“We really hope people will embrace the spirit of Christmas and help us raise the money needed to support families going through such a tough time,” says Jo.

“You can choose what you want to give up, be it your morning coffee or afternoon pick-me up chocolate bar, and donate through the Child Cancer Foundation’s Facebook page. We’d love people to share an “unselfie” photo on our site and encourage friends to take part.”

Jo says that cancer doesn’t stop for the Christmas holidays, so neither does the work of the Child Cancer Foundation, which aims to reduce the impact of cancer by offering practical and meaningful support to families when they need it most.

“More than three children are diagnosed with cancer each week in New Zealand. That’s 175 families each year whose lives are turned upside down in an instant,” says Jo.

“The Child Cancer Foundation aims to ensure that these children and their families are supported, informed and well cared for. At any one time we are supporting more than 500 families across the country on a journey that they had not planned to take.”

The Foundation receives no direct funding from the government or from any other cancer charities, so relies on the generosity of New Zealanders to fund its services.

To download an #unselfie sign to use for photos or be part of the movement search for Child Cancer Foundation on Facebook or click through from www.childcancer.org.nz . To donate please click on the donate button on the Child Cancer Foundation’s Facebook page or text BEAD to 206.

This is the first year New Zealand has been involved in the #GivingTuesday movement, which began in the USA in 2012 as a national day of giving.

#GivingTuesday was founded in the USA by the 92nd Street Y and the UN Foundation. Seeing an opportunity to channel the generous spirit of the holiday season to inspire action around charitable giving, the movement aimed to find ways to promote and celebrate the great tradition of giving. In New Zealand, #GivingTuesday has been initiated by the Fundraising Institute of New Zealand, TechSoup New Zealand, Philanthropy New Zealand and Volunteering New Zealand.
