2014 Silver Fern Rally a Family Affair
The 2014 epay Silver Fern Rally like so many other forms of motorsport was a family affair.
From karting through to the top levels of motorsport it is not uncommon to see families involved in different capacities, either competing against each other or supporting each other in the sport.
Without taking service crew personnel into account there were many family connections featuring husbands and wives, fathers and sons, and brothers in the 2014 epay Silver Fern Rally.
There were two husband and wife teams - Brian and Anne Stokes from Waikuku plus Australians Keith and Mary Anne Callinan.
Fathers and sons were reasonably common throughout the field as well. There was Gary & Adrian Smith, Jim & Andrew Vause, Ian & Jeremy Begg, Stu and Brad McFarlane plus Tony & Jeremy Aimers. They were the father and son combinations sharing driving and co-driving duties in the same car. There were also fathers and sons competing against each other - most notably John and David Hills from Australia and Southlanders John and George Keast. There would have been another set too - Garry Adcock and his son Kane from Nelson were both entered to drive in the Challenge event but Kane had to pull out prior to the start. There was also a set of brothers - James and Tony Hewlett of Christchurch.
A real family affair in the close knit rallying community.
