Cambridge wins top sports club award
Cambridge FC have been named Sports Club of the Year at the Waipa Networks District Sports Awards.
The award was announced at a Sports Waikato dinner at a packed Avantidrome on November 17, where a record number of
nominees gathered to celebrate their district’s sporting achievements.
Cambridge chair Greg Zeuren was named Waipa’s Sports Administrator of the Year while retiring women’s captain Maria
Anderton received a Services to Sport Medal, recognising her 35 consecutive seasons of competitive football.
Cambridge’s award tops a golden year for the club in which they were named WaiBOP Football Club of the Year, winning the
Colin Bell/Ron White Memorial Trophy.
The club also won the Supreme Award at the 2014 TrustPower Community Services Awards for Waipa District, becoming only
the second sports club to take the supreme award. Cambridge will be Waipa’s nominee at the national community services
awards in Wellington next March.
Accepting the latest award, club president Peter Martens said it was apt that the club was based in Waipa which calls
itself the “Home of Champions”, and said that Cambridge was becoming the home of many sports and his club wanted to
become known as a “Home of Football”.
Chair Zeuren said the awards capped an “amazing” year and he thanked the club’s “support team” that made it possible.
The judges’ citation for his award said: “Greg has led a team to expand (the club’s) services, providing 562 senior
coaching sessions and staging 141 senior competition games and enabling the club to be a significant contributor to
football in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty region. Due to his strong leadership, Greg’s level of commitment and exceptional
hard work as a volunteer has inspired others and epitomised the spirit of the Cambridge Football Club in a landmark
year.”
Cambridge will become Waipa’s nominee for the Waikato Sports Awards to be held at Hamilton’s Claudelands Events Centre
on January 29.
Cambridge Football Club has about 650 players and operates all-year from its grounds at John Kerkhof Park, Cambridge.
During the winter football season, its teams play in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty competitions and in the summer, it’s the
host ground for ASB Premiership side WaiBOP United.
