Jo Murray receives Trish McKelvey Leadership Award
Athletics stalwart Jo Murray has been awarded
the 2014 Trish McKelvey Leadership Award for outstanding
leadership in the sport sector at Sport Wellington’s
annual Stakeholder Function and AGM.
Murray was presented with the prized trophy and certificate by Trish McKelvey herself, in front of a crowd of nearly 100 of Wellington’s sport and active recreation leaders, funders and politicians. The function was held at New Zealand Rugby House.
Named after Trish McKelvey, a long serving former chairperson of Sport Wellington, the award recognises a volunteer who has provided outstanding leadership in the sports sector over the preceding years as an administrator, coach, official, player or a combination of these. Sport Wellington works with Trish McKelvey to select the winner of this award from what is always a very strong group of candidates. The selection panel comprises Trish McKelvey, a Sport Wellington Board member and Phil Gibbons, the CEO of Sport Wellington.
Murray has built the junior component of the Wellington’s Olympic Harrier Club to a position where it has been argued to be the top club of its type in Wellington and greater Wellington region, and has taken out the top club trophy for two years in a row.
Murray has overseen a growth in the clubs membership from 140 to 300 members, which McKelvey attributes to Murrays “hard work, absolute dedication, loyalty and commitment.” McKelvey added that “without Jo’s hard work, the club would not have survived, let alone be placed where they are today.”
Murray is also engaged and involved with Athletics Wellington in the capacity of Sport Development Manager where she influences the work going on inside club, athlete and coach development projects, communications, events, implementing new initiatives and projects in partnership with Sport Wellington and Athletics NZ.
McKelvey, a former Cricket coach of Murrays, was excited to award Murray with the prestigious title and believes she is indeed someone who deserves recognition. “She has demonstrated leadership qualities which ‘made a difference’. Qualities such as developing the culture of the wider team she is part of, building relationships, and providing clear direction and purpose through her leadership.”
