MS Bike the Bridge Honoured with Leading
Award
With just a day to go before thousands of cyclists take part in MS Bike the Bridge 2014, the event has picked up a prestigious award for the 2013 edition at a glittering ceremony at Albany’s QBE Stadium.
Bike the Bridge was crowned the Tass Print Sporting Event of the Year at the Massey University Harbour Sport 2014 Excellence Awards, beating off stiff competition from events such as Ford National Hockey League and Senior National Tournament, the North Shore Marathon and the SKYCITY New Zealand Badminton Open.
Organiser Callum McNair was delighted with such timely recognition for the event, which is rapidly becoming a major fixture on the Auckland sporting calendar. “Bike the Bridge is a great example of teamwork in action and this award is a tribute to the hundreds of volunteers who make it happen, along with our sponsors and partners who offer such tremendous support,” he explained.
“It’s an event which has something for everyone, whether you’re a serious or social cyclist, and is ideal for families or teams of workmates and friends. As well as offering the unique opportunity to ride across the Harbour Bridge, it also raises funds for Multiple Sclerosis Auckland with the total raised from the first two events standing at more than $170,000.”
MS Bike the Bridge was also a finalist in the
Massey University Innovation in Sport category.
Entries
are still open for Sunday’s event, which features three
courses: 105km, 50km and 20km. Each one of these routes
includes the unique experience of riding over the iconic
Auckland Harbour Bridge and the full length of the Northern
Busway.
All participants cross the same finish line at the North Harbour (QBE) Stadium, where primary school children ride on the closed ring road and toddlers can enjoy their own dedicated track inside the safe confines of the oval.
