The NZ Festival of Tennis is thrilled to
announce the addition of the number one ranked doubles
player in the world – Sara Errani (14) to the 2015 ASB
Classic.
2014 has seen another strong season for the former world number 5, reaching the quarter-finals of both the French Open and the US Open, where she beat Venus Williams en route, eventually overcome by finalist and 2015 ASB Classic top seed Caroline Wozniacki. The world number 14 has performed well at the WTA premier level also reaching the quarter finals in Doha and the semi final in Stuttgart.
Whilst being a perenial top ten player for the past three seasons and capturing seven singles titles, it has been the doubles court where the aggressive Italian has excelled. As one half of the world’s best doubles team, Errani has captured five Grand Slam titles (being a finalist in two others) and an impressive 24 WTA doubles trophies.
“Errani brings some real depth to what is shaping up to be an incredible ASB Classic field,” says Tournament Director, Karl Budge.
“She is the best doubles player on the planet and has captured seven singles title as well. It’s a great signing for us.”
2014 has been an incredible year for Errani winning five doubles titles (Australian Open, Madrid, Stuttgart, Wimbledon and Montreal, three final appearances (Sydney, Rome and Roland Garros) and three semi-finals (Eastborne, Doha and Paris).
“Two players inside the world’s top 15 and and a seven time Grand Slam champion shows just how tough this years event will be” added Budge.
Errani becomes the second top 15 player confirmed for a stellar ASB Classic line-up, which includes former world number one and US Open runner-up, Caroline Wozniacki (8), seven-time Grand Slam champion, Venus Williams (18), American rising star Sloane Stephens (36), and one of the brightest stars in world tennis and double junior Grand Slam champion, Ana Konjuh (84).
