ON SONG shows CPIT has talent
One budding musician will win the coveted APRA song-writing award tonight at CPIT.
The ON SONG evening, part of CPIT’s Creative Festival, will showcase Bachelor of Music students’ outstanding
song-writing talent. Students will give it their all in live performances and one talented student will take home a
coveted APRA song-writing award.
The APRA MusicArts Award has been donated by APRA to recognise the best song written in the MusicArts programme for the
year.
The winner will receive $250, a trophy, plus the honour of having the prestigious APRA brand attached to their CV. The
judges are Lyttleton song writing icon Lindon Puffin and Brad Banks from The Dukes.
CPIT MusicArts director Liam Ryan says ON SONG is a new partnership between APRA and CPIT MusicArts, designed to foster
song writing in Christchurch. “APRA are the royalty collecting agency for Australasian song writers. They are also an
advocacy group for New Zealand musicians.”
This award is part of a wider partnership including the APRA Songwriter in Residence programme which was rolled out for
the first time when musical legend Warren Maxwell visited CPIT earlier this year.
Only CPIT students can enter the ON SONG Award competition. However, in 2015 APRA are also working with CPIT MusicArts
to promote a nationwide songwriting competition scheduled for the middle of 2015. The QuickSong competition will be
announced early 2015.
The winner will be decided and announced tonight, Thursday November 6th, concert from 7.30pm in the CPIT Musical Arts
Auditorium. The cash prize and a trophy will be presented at the MusicArts BEAT event on December 3.
ON SONG is one of the first events in CPIT’s Creative Festival, which includes fashion catwalk show PITCH, live music
concert BEAT, visual arts exhibition RIPE, celebration of Maori culture HIHA and interior design exhibition VISUALISE
from now until the beginning of December.
