More than 6,000 Expected to Dress up for New Zealand’s Largest Halloween Event

Organisers of MOTAT’s ‘Twisted Victorian Tale’ event are expecting a ‘visual feast’ of costumes to be on display for what is expected to be the Museum’s biggest Halloween event to date.

The event takes place between 7pm and midnight this Friday and Marketing Manager Danielle Dunn is excited about the level of interest.

“We have expanded our activity this year,” says Ms Dunn. “We have taken the ‘scare factor’ to a new level and while there is plenty of entertainment for families and young ones, we do have some particularly horrifying surprises in stall for those that enjoy a bit of Halloween thrill.”

Visitors are offered the chance to wander through specially designed ‘scare zones’ that include the Bedlam Asylum and an encounter with Jack the Ripper while the kids can join the Mad Hatter for tea, help Sherlock Holmes solve a mystery, take a horse and carriage ride or be transformed by the face painter into a Victorian ghost, ghoul or monster.

People are also being encouraged to dress up in their spookiest Halloween costume. Between 8pm-10pm prizes will be given out in the First Scene Costume Parade for a number of categories including best costume, best Victorian inspired costume and best children’s costume.

“This will be a ‘visual feast’ for anyone who loves Halloween,” says Ms Dunn. “If previous years’ are anything to go by, we will be seeing some extremely unique and elaborate costumes on Fridaynight.”

Technology will also play an important role in setting the atmosphere. Organisers have engaged local Grey Lynn company Perceptual Engineering to project giant Halloween-inspired images and footage onto the iconic Pump House building.

MOTAT also has a focus around educating people about the origins of Halloween and history of the Victorian period.

“The Victorian times saw the birth of horror as we know it today; from Jack the Ripper to Dracula, horror from this era was very dark as the Victorians had a morbid fascination with death.” says Ms Dunn. “MOTAT is uniquely placed to offer this kind of event and while those who have visited the museum before may be familiar with the grounds, it has a very different atmosphere in the dark.”

Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.iticket.co.nz or phone (09) 361 1000.

Ticket prices include admission to MOTAT's Olde Hallows Eve event and all activities within the event (e.g. Horse & Carriage rides, face painting and photography studio). Food and beverage will be available on-site at an additional cost.
