Samoa Boxer Vaitele Soi Joins Sky Arena
Event Polynesia, Vaitele Soi’s management, this morning confirmed that the Samoa cruiserweight champion will be fighting in the SKY ARENA Super 8 promotion.
According to the New Zealand newspaper the Sunday News this morning, “Undefeated Samoan prospect Vaitele Soi will be announced today as the final main-card fighter in Sky Arena's cruiserweight Super 8 tournament next month.”
“The 22-0 knockout artist joins Australians Brad Pitt (15-1), Daniel Ammann (29-7) and Anthony McCracken (16-7) and Kiwi contenders Monty Filimaea (9-10) and Lance Bryant (3-0), with two wildcards to be revealed this week for the event, which will be headlined by Shane Cameron and Kali Meehan's heavyweight brawl.”
"Soi will meet Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Sailele Malielegaoi this week before taking part in the tournament and is expected to receive the backing of his nation."
"He will call in to update the Prime Minister before leaving for New Zealand."
"Vaitele is the underdog because he is coming out of Samoa," Puni acknowledged. "It will be hard but he is a knockout specialist, so this format will suit him."
"He hasn't fought in the last 10 months and preparation is very basic in Samoa but he is an exciting fighter and anything can happen. He's got a really good chance."
This is not a one-off appearance, either. Soi has signed a long-term deal with Sky Arena, joining promising Kiwi cruiserweight David Aloua (11-1).
Plans are already in place for Soi to compete for a regional title early next year and link with Lollo Heimuli, the renowned trainer who also works with UFC star Mark Hunt and Aloua.
"Getting this call-up opens a lot of doors," Puni said.
Vaitele Soi who fights out of Samoa is back after a few days of training and sparring in American Samoa.
Vaitele holds the Satiamaalii 'matai' title from Vailele where he hails from and the villages of Taga in Savaii and Vaovai, Falealili.
