Dunedin named as one of 22 stops on nationwide trophy tour

The ICC Cricket World Cup trophy is about to begin a nationwide tour of New Zealand, with a stop for every one of the 22 years since the tournament was last here in 1992.

On the penultimate day the trophy will be in Dunedin, with an event to be held at the Octagon from 6.00am to 9.00am on Wednesday 26 November.

This will feature an interactive exhibition on the history of the tournament, cricket skills challenges, giveaways and the chance to have your free photo with the ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy. Fans are invited to share their photographs on Twitter and Facebook using the hashtags #cwc15 and #cwctrophytour.

The trophy will then depart Dunedin on the Taieri Gorge Railway for smaller events in Middlemarch and Alexandra.

Head of New Zealand for ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, Therese Walsh, says the tour is the ideal way to give as many Kiwis as possible a chance to help kick start our biggest ever summer of cricket.

“Cricket is our summer game and a national passion. We will have waited a generation for the return of what has grown to be one of biggest sporting events in the world, and this is the perfect way to show New Zealanders what the tournament is all about."

Mayor of Dunedin Dave Cull says, “We’re thrilled that next month Dunedin will host the trophy, which will really start the festivities for this major international sporting event. With a bright and early start in the Octagon, it’s a great opportunity for families to bring their kids in before school so they can see the trophy and get their photos taken.”

The ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy stands 60cm tall and weighs 13kg. Made of silver and gold, it was designed and crafted in London by Garrard & Co, who also made the America’s Cup and English Premier League Trophy. The trophy features a golden globe of the world on which all continents are represented. This globe signifies a cricket ball and is held up by three silver columns shaped as stumps and bails. These represent the three fundamentals of cricket: batting, bowling and fielding.
