Reinventing the Dining Space

Uptown Business Association
Monday 20th October 2014

REINVENTING THE DINING SPACE

A New Zealand first dining experience in Uptown, Auckland.

Dining out has always been a monotonous affair. For thousands of years people have dined at restaurants where they are seated at a table on the ground. It’s about time the dining space was reinvented – let’s make dinner a thrilling experience.

This Wednesday the 22nd of October, Uptown Rise & Dine is not only taking diners out for dinner, but also taking them up.

For the first time in New Zealand, a group of diners will be treated to a three-course dinner served atop industrial scissor lifts providing views of the Auckland skyline and harbour.

The six lifts seating 12 diners will rise high into the sky for this unique dinner.

Selected pairs will win a table for two at the event, with one table selling on Trade Me last week for $355. All proceeds from this auction are to be donated to saving the St David’s Cathedral which is currently scheduled to be demolished.

Uptown is pushing the boundaries and channelling the kiwi ‘No. 8 wire’ mentality to deliver a truly innovative dining experience that reflects the nature of the area.

Gary Holmes, General Manager of Uptown Business Association, believes the idea fits well with the recent rebrand of the business district.

“It’s a novel idea and we are happy that Uptown can be part of something truly unique which not only showcases our businesses but also our vibrant, exciting precinct which is definitely on the way up”, Mr Holmes says.

Joyce Fantoni, co-owner of Gina’s Italian Kitchen is excited to serve a three-course meal to diners in the sky, with wine and waiters to match.

“We love the atmosphere we create here at Gina’s but we’re eager to get out of the kitchen and serve our food in a totally different setting”, says Joyce.

The event will be held in the Wilson car park on Alex Evans Street.

Uptown encompasses Eden Terrace, Grafton and Newton and was officially established as a business district in the middle of 2012 and renamed in November last year.
