VSA hosts New Zealand Premiere of Timor-Leste’s first feature film

Volunteer Service Abroad (NZ) is bringing Timor-Leste’s first homegrown feature film to New Zealand audiences in two very special screenings.

Beatriz’s War is set during the civil unrest in Timor-Leste leading to independence from Portugal and follows a young woman whose partner disappears during the violence. It is based on the 16thFrench tale, Martin Guerre.

The movie is the first feature film to made made by, for and about Timorese people in the local language, Tetun (with English subtitles). It was nearly a decade in the making – the film makers held movie nights every month in Timor-Leste’s capital, Dili, to raisie enough money to film the next few scenes.

These screenings are the only planned showings in New Zealand – a unique chance to hear the story of one of our Asia-Pacific neighbours.

Volunteer Service Abroad is New Zealand’s largest and most experienced volunteer agency working in international development.
