Cake Named as New Zealand’s Favourite Comfort Food Dish
You Want a Piece of Me? Cake Named as New Zealand’s Favourite Comfort Food Dish
A recent survey carried out by The Coffee Club New Zealand, has shown that, for the majority of Kiwis, cake is the ultimate comfort food.
Over the last fortnight, leading up to New Zealand’s first National Comfort Food Day on 24October, The Coffee Club have been running an online survey asking people to name their favourite comfort food dish, the comfort food they most associate with New Zealand and the comfort food they most associate with the region in which they live.
Thirty-five percent of the nation listed cake as their preferred choice, with chocolate cake and carrot cake being the clear favourites.
“Cake is served on so many special occasions, from birthdays, to weddings and family get-togethers. It’s really not surprising it is the favourite comfort food of so many New Zealanders, given the positive memories associated with it,” says Andy Lucas Director and Marketing Manager of The Coffee Club New Zealand.
Pasta dishes, such as lasagna and spaghetti Bolognese, ranked second on the list of New Zealand’s favourite comfort foods with 11% of the vote and ice cream came in third with 8%. Bacon and eggs, hot rice pudding, roast dinner and burgers also featured.
Cake came in a close second in the race for the comfort food most associated with New Zealand, with 20% of the vote. It was pipped by good old Kiwi favourite fish’n’chips with 25%. Pies of all kinds came third with 12%.
Regionally, Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Canterbury backed fish’n’chips, while Hawkes Bay and Manawatu clearly have a sweeter tooth opting for a variety of desserts, predominantly cakes and muffins. One Wellingtonian got a little fancy, naming crayfish ravioli as their favourite comfort food dish, while the clear winner in Marlborough was wine.
“The Coffee Club is all about providing Kiwis with their favourite foods,” says Andy. “We wanted to find out more about what Kiwis love. It turns out most of what they love is already available on our menus, though I’m not sure we’ll be adding crayfish ravioli any time soon!”
