Wanted: Art Students at Alberton
A Devonport artist passionate about “teaching the world to draw” will hold a two-day workshop for people wanting to develop their art skills at Alberton, the property in Mt Albert cared for by Heritage New Zealand, on October 21 and 28.
Erica Soman will lead Art @ Alberton, which will be limited to 15 participants.
“The aim of the workshop is to encourage and develop people’s drawing skills with small group sizes and supportive, experienced tutoring,” says Erica, who has a Masters in Fine Art and a Diploma in Teaching.
“We’ll also have the absolute privilege of having Alberton to ourselves as the workshop will take place on days when the house is closed to the public. Our artists will be able to draw inspiration from Alberton’s beautiful surroundings and its collection. ”
Day one of the workshop, entitled ‘A Salute to the Victorian’, will focus on Still Life.
“Alberton is rich in material that lends itself to Still Life drawing, and students will be able to focus and develop a drawing composition featuring objects from the interiors of Alberton using soluble graphite and aquarelle pencil,” she says.
“The second day will focus on Architectural Drawing where students will learn about perspective, vanishing points and how to develop a wash style drawing using the architecture of this grand heritage building.”
The Property Manager of Alberton, Rendell McIntosh, is delighted that the house will be used as both a venue for Erica’s workshop, and serve as a source of artistic inspiration as well.
“Alberton has an ambience that is highly conducive to creativity, and so I’m sure our artists will really enjoy the experience of learning from Erica in this environment,” he says.
A second round of Art @ Alberton workshops has also been scheduled for November 18 and 25.
