Saturday 05 October 2014 | The return of all but one of the Maori seats to Labour has commentators on the right calling for them to be abolished. Prime Minister John Key, who opposed the seats until he started counting on the Maori Party’s vote, says that would divide the country with hikois from hell. So does the high number of MPs with Maori whakapapa mean the seats are no longer needed, or are they still needed to ensure there are some MPs who are accountable to Maori. In Korero Mai ki Ahau on Saturday we talk to former Maori Party president Pem Bird about the issue.
Sunday 06 October 2014 | A new report drawing on Statistics New Zealand’s Te Kupenga survey of Maori wellbeing has found clear links between immersion in Maori cultural practices and whether people can use and do use te reo Maori. On Sunday in Korero Mai ki Ahau we talk to Victoria University academic and Te Mangai Paho board member Rawinia Higgins about the findings.
Korero Mai Ki Ahau a half hour features programme every Saturday and Sunday from noon, which takes an in – depth look at issues affecting te ao Maori. Totally in te reo Maori brought to you by Waatea News in association with Te Mangai Paho.
