Kiwiburn: an inclusive and unique Kiwi festival encourages locals to get involved
Hunterville – Burning Man, the popular annual festival in the Nevada desert, has spawned a movement of smaller events worldwide based
on the event's founding principles of radical self-reliance and participation. Kiwiburn, the New Zealand Regional
Burning Man event is in it's second year in Hunterville and 12th year overall. The event draws over 800 participants
from around New Zealand and world to create art, music, workshops and enjoy the beautiful surrounds of the festival
site, affectionately dubbed 'the paddock' by festival goers.
Kiwiburn aims to integrate with and make positive contributions to the region. Last year security for the event was
provided by local volunteer firefighters. Kiwiburn also donated $2000 worth of native trees to the local Lion's Club for
planting in Queens Park. The event provides a great opportunity for locals to experience a positive and inclusive global
artistic and social movement on their doorstep and Kiwiburn encourages the local community to participate.
Kiwiburn is constantly changing and evolving with a different art theme every year. The 2015 art theme is WYRD – an
Anglo Saxon and Norse word meaning everything in the universe is connected by a weave of intricate strands.
This theme will influence the kinds of art people bring to the event as well as the ‘man' itself.
No money is exchanged at the event nor are there any paid artists or performers, rather event goers are encouraged to
make their creative dreams come true by bringing whatever they wish to share with the community.
This ranges from large scale interactive art installations, theme camps, body painting and workshops. The event climaxes
with the burning of a large wooden 'man’ effigy constructed by a different group of artists each year.
