The Lion Foundation Netball Champs, 2014 takes place from Monday 29th September to Friday 3rd October at The Trusts
Arena in Henderson, Auckland.
Defending champions Dunedin have been denied another shot at the national title, knocked out by a united Wellington side
in the quarter-finals of the Lion Foundation Netball Champs at The Trusts Arena in Henderson.
Led by midcourter and captain Stacey Bascand, Wellington’s concerted team effort produced a giant-killing performance to
outclass Dunedin, 59-47. Wellington showed they had well and truly rebounded from their first-round thumping from
Christchurch, playing together as a unit to dominate Dunedin throughout the court.
Wellington will now take on North Harbour in tomorrow’s first semi-final, while the star-studded Christchurch line-up
will meet Hamilton in the other play-off clash.
Kapi Mana almost caused a boil-over in their quarterfinal clash with Christchurch, but the Mainlanders held on for a
nail-biting 48-46 victory. Both sides were guilty of making unforced errors, and Christchurch failed to take advantage
of opportunities to pull away.
Pocket rocket shooter Jezrae Te Runa-Morehu was in fine form for Kapi Mana, while her versatile team-mate, Elias
Shadrock, playing at goal defence, made life difficult for the Christchurch shooters.
Hamilton were too strong for an Auckland side who continually stumbled on attack. Hamilton’s 56-33 win was cemented by
consistent shooting from Elsa Brown, and the reliable defence of Samantha Sinclair and Jo Tripp.
North Harbour held their nerve to eventually out-point Waitakere, 55-46, in their quarterfinal earlier in the day, with
Waitakere still in the reckoning until the final spell.
After several lead changes, Harbour established a five-goal lead at three-quarter time, anchored by the decisive
shooting of Mystics up-and-comer Malia Paseka. But she had her work cut out for her, up against the superb poise and
timing of Waitakere circle defenders Alex McLeod-Smith and Michaela Sokolich-Beatson.
