Musical promotes mental health awareness

Musical promotes mental health awareness

Following hot on the heels of Mental Health Awareness Week, Auckland Music Theatre is staging the Auckland premiere of Next To Normal.

Next To Normal is an award-winning rock musical with book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt. The recipient of three Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize Award for Drama, Next To Normal follows a mother who struggles with worsening bipolar disorder and the effect that her illness has on her family.

This is the first time Next To Normal has been staged in Auckland and Auckland Music Theatre hopes the musical will help to raise awareness about mental health. Next To Normal will be showing at Westpoint Performing Arts Centre from October 25 to November 8, just two weeks after Mental Health Awareness Week. A special presentation and performance to raise money for the Matt Skellern Bipolar Trust will be taking place on October 29.

Auckland Music Theatre is the longest-established music theatre company in the Auckland region and has been presenting audiences with memorable theatrical experiences for 95 years. More information can be found at http://www.aucklandmusictheatre.org.nz/

Mental Health Awareness Week is organised by the Mental Health Foundation and takes place between October 6-12. See http://www.mentalhealth.org.nz/page/995-home for further details.
