Potato Tubas Hold Much A-peel for Levity Beet
Dunedin (Monday, 29 September 2014) - An unlikely partnership between Veggie Boys, radio show Space Station Kiwi and Dunedin Public Libraries has led to an unusual musical outcome.
Award-winning children’s songwriter Levity Beet will take to the stage in Dunedin next month. Levity hails from Takaka, Golden Bay, and writes, produces and performs original, quirky kids’ music. His particular talent is creating new musical instruments to show you don’t need an expensive guitar to become a rock star.
Levity will tour four Dunedin Public Libraries over the school holidays, crafting musical instruments out of the humble potato, and making music with children. The workshops will be held at Waikouaiti, Port Chalmers, Mosgiel and City Libraries, with a small charge of $5 for those who attend.
The workshops are aimed at primary school children, accompanied by their parents who might be called on to lend a hand with the potato peeler. Each workshop will be followed by a performance by Levity.
Libraries’ Events Co-ordinator Kay Mercer says, “There are probably not many household appliances that can’t be made into musical instruments in Levity’s hands, with hilarious consequences. These concerts are sure to be a delight to children and families of all ages”.
The concerts are free and everyone is welcome to attend, regardless of whether they have taken part in the workshops.
Levity will also perform a free concert at Veggie Boys’ South Dunedin store in Macandrew Road. Store owner Marty Hay says, “I’m looking forward to hearing what kind of music can be made from the variety of fruit and vegetables on my shelves”.
