Kiwis clipped in finewool shearing match

Two West Australians have made first claims to being the top finewool shearers in Australasia by beating two of New Zealand’s best in a transtasman match at the Royal Perth Show.

Damien Boyle, from Tambellup, and Mark Buscumb, from Williams, both southeast of Perth, won the match yesterday against New Zealand shearers Grant Smith, of Rakaia, and Charlie O’Neill, of Alexandra.

The teams meet again next week during the New Zealand Merino Championships at Alexandra, Central Otago, where Boyle and Buscumb were beaten last year by New Zealanders Tony Coster, of Rakaia, and Chris Vickers, of Palmerston.

Boyle will be aiming to win New Zealand’s only finewool title for a record fifth time in the opening event of the Shearing Sports New Zealand season which comprises more than 60 shows and ends in April...
