Tuatara Open Late Live music with the Balkanistas, Future Sounds of Mzansi and DJ B.Lo
Thursday 2 October, 5-10pm
City Gallery’s Tuatara Open Late take place on the first Thursday of every month with a changing programme of after-dark
events, cash bar, supper treats and all galleries open until 10pm.
This October, City Gallery’s Open Late line-up is inspired by the sound of William Kentridge’s mesmerising work The Refusal of Time and his home, South Africa. Events include a special screening of the contemporary music documentary Future Sounds of Mzansi, from South African rapper, Spoek Mathambo; a special DJ set exploring the diverse styles of African music; and the
magnificent 22-piece band, the Balkanistas, who will be performing their ‘big sound’ live.
Timetable of events:
6.30pm, Spoek Mathambo's documentary film Future Sound of Mzansi addresses the changing cultural landscape of South Africa through its electronic-music scene. Directors Lebogang
Rasethaba and rapper Spoek Mathambo travelled around South Africa to explore and capture the rich electronic music scene
and the strong movement of producers, instrumentalists, vocalists and party goers.
It features an exciting range of emerging electronic music artists from various SA cities including Aero Manyelo; Black
Coffee; Christian Tiger School; Felix Laband; John Wizards; Krushed & Sorted; Machepies and many more. (Please note: this is a “work in progress” cut of the film).
5 - 8.30pm, DJ B.Lo is playing a special set 'It Began in Africa', exploring both contemporary and historical African music forms
and movements. The set will showcase the tremendous innovation and creativity in African music genres, drawing upon the
African continent's rich musical pedigree, from Ethiopian jazz and Nigerian afro-funk through to modern sounds from Mali
and Spoek Mathambo’s own South Africa.
8.30pm, taking centre stage, the headline act the Balkanistas. This exuberant mob has morphed into one of New Zealand’s
favourite bands. Evoking musical mania wherever they go, the 22-piece group of percussion, brass, winds, strings, vocals
and accordions will play a 'big sound' in response to the soundscape of William Kentridge: The Refusal of Time.
