Inspire Young Kiwi Inventors These School Holidays at MOTAT
‘Invention Nation’ is the latest MOTAT School Holiday Experience and will run from 27 September – 12 October from 10am –
5pm. The Holiday Experience will introduce visitors to the five stages of inventing, from the idea, design, prototype,
testing and to refining, and require visitors to complete a range of activities.
MOTAT CEO Michael Frawley says “this School Holiday Experience, in combination with our newest ‘Welcome to the Machine’
Exhibition, demonstrates the experience we’re trying to create by developing MOTAT into a ‘light bulb’ institution.”
Visitors will take a journey through the MOTAT Great North Road site and complete four activities, ‘Sort It’, ‘Bridge
It’, ‘Launch It’ and ‘Grab It’, where something must be invented at each station to solve a problem.
In ‘Sort It’ sand has gotten into food and visitors will need to invent something to sort out food from the sand.
‘Bridge It’ requires visitors to invent a bridge to get across the other side, ‘Launch It’ involves inventing a launcher
to fight through the targets and ‘Grab It’ needs visitors to invent something to move dangerous toxic acid out of harm’s
way.
Visitors will also need to help build a massive marble moving machine using a classic tradition of the Rube Goldberg
machine. Each visitor will construct a tile and add it to the wall to expand the machine. Pictures of the machine as it
expands will be available on Facebook.
In addition, there will be information about Kiwi inventors, and for the children, they will each receive their very own
Invention Journal to take away. Children will also be able to visit ‘The MOTAT Story’ Exhibition and learn more about
the MOTAT and its 50 year history.
“There are plenty of challenges that will light up your imagination at MOTAT these school holidays. There will be
something for all ages these school holidays” says Mr Frawley.
