MEDIA RELEASE: For Immediate Release
WANTED: SHAKESPEAREAN CARNIVAL CROSS-DRESSERS
Timon Of Athens, Actor Auditions
Victoria University Summer Shakespeare 2015 Director Brett Adam, is looking for adventurous actors with strong vocal ability, a passion for Shakespeare and carnival flair. Auditions are being held in Wellington on Saturday 27 September.
Book your audition time ASAP with Katrina Turkilsen, Stage Manager, via stagemanager@summershakespeare.co.nz.
“Any “special skills” – acrobatic, musical, carnival skills – are an asset” says Katrina. “Take note that cross-casting is definite. In other words, some male roles will be played by women and vice versa.”
To audition you will need to be available for a half hour group workshop in either the morning or afternoon (10am or 2pm) as well as a 20 minute solo audition. To prepare for your audition you will need to prepare a short monologue from any Shakespearian play (no more than 15 lines).
Audtions will be held at Victoria University on Saturday 27th September in Room 312, Student Union Building, Gate 1, Kelburn Parade, Kelburn.
Rehearsals will start 18th October with Christmas break between 20th December and 4th January 2014.
The show season will be at the Dell, Wellington Botanic Gardens, from Friday 13th February to Saturday 28th February.
The Victoria University Summer Shakespeare 2015 play is Timon Of Athens.
[SPOILER ALERT!] Timon is a kind and generous Athenian lord, with many friends on whom he lavishes extravagant and frequent gifts. However, the day comes when he falls into debt and discovers that all of his “friends” are no longer there for him. Enraged about the fickleness of human nature, he leaves Athens and retreats to a cave. He turns against his former city and begins bribing soldiers and pirates to attack Athens, his anger at his friends turning to revenge against the entire city.
Timon Of Athens showcases the glitz and glamour of a wealthy, extravagant life sharply contrasted against the consequences of debt and the realities of false friends. It is a study of greed and the human condition, a look into a life turned around.
