NZL Sailing Team at ISAF Worlds: Silver for Aleh and Powrie

Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie have won silver at the 2014 Women’s 470 World Championships, relinquishing their title to Lara Vadlau and Jolanta Ogar of Austria in today’s light wind medal race in Santander, Spain.

Racing in a world class fleet of 54 boats all vying for national Olympic qualification, a silver medal here is still a significant achievement by anyone’s standards and Aleh and Powrie add this to an already impressive year in which they’ve won gold at three ISAF Sailing World Cup Regattas and also at the Aquece Rio Olympic Test Event sailed in Rio last month.

Aleh and Powrie have come away with the silver medal unable to defend their 2013 world title after a close battle this week in Santander with Austria’s Lara Vadlau and Jolanta Ogar.

The Austrians won today’s medal race, sailed in very light winds, and take out the Championship.

“Tough day for us at Santander 2014,” reports Jo Aleh clearly disappointed to miss out on the title. “We had a chance at the start of the race but didn’t capitalize on it. Painful race. Oh well, second place it is.”

Aleh and Powrie had to beat Vadlau and Ogar across the line today to stand atop the podium and after an up and down race the kiwis crossed in 6th place to take the silver medal. Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark round out the podium places, taking the bronze medal for Great Britain.

49er, 49erFX, Finn & Nacra

The 49er, 49erFX , Finn and Nacra classes are all vying for top ten positioning today in order to get a start in tomorrow’s medal races in those events. The light winds today mean racing has continued until late in the day in Santander and today’s results for the men’s and women’s skiff, the mixed multihull and the Finn heavy weight dinghy are being finalised.

A further media release will be issued during the course of the day with the latest standings in those classes. Find latest results here.
