Wellington, September 17th 2014
New Caledonian artist Florence Dosdane will be participating in the 2014 World of Wearable Art Festival in Wellington. With her very first submission to take part in the festival being successful, Florence was selected to present her creation in the Weta Workshop Costume & Film Section – Kingdoms of the east.

Florence spent her childhood travelling throughout France, according to where her father’s military career would send them. Aged 20 years old, she decided to return to the island of her origins, New Caledonia. A self-taught artist, Florence began exploring creative technics and materials- Sculpture, drawing, painting, sewing, dyeing – from age 13. She also studied beauty therapy in Noumea.

After winning her first costume and cosplay competition in New Caledonia with a Dalek replica built with a laundry basket, Florence decided to try herchance at her first international festival: “Last year, my brother returned from a trip to New Zealand with a DVD of the 2012 World of Wearable Art festival. It was precisely the platform I could have dreamed of. I find fabulous the whole concept of combining creation and staging.”

Florence says that her selection came as a great surprise: “It encourages me to create new entries for the coming years and to explore the different sections, including the South Pacific section” .During her time in Wellington, she will focus on her participation in the festival. She is also looking forward to meeting with other designers from the Pacific region and all over the world.

The delegation of New Caledonia to New Zealand and the Embassy of France are delighted to welcome Florence to New Zealand and wish her the best for the competition.
