Sell-out tournament huge success
Almost 450 people of various sporting abilities participated in Wellington’s only indoor sports competition on Sunday
(14 September) at the ASB Sports Centre, Kilbirnie.
Thirty teams from throughout the region and as far away as well as Palmerston North played eight different sports over a
five hour period at Ignition. For many it was the first time to give floorball, bowls, cage soccer and speedball a go.
Other sports played were indoor netball, four-way volleyball, table tennis and indoor football.
Run by Ignite Sport Trust, Ignition aims to bring diverse groups together to compete at different levels and different
sports. Prominent teams this year were ones from Parliamentary Services, Adventure Wellington, Sport Wellington, and one
made up of police staff, in addition to others from various organizations and churches. Youth teams were well
represented from schools and church youth groups.
For the first year since Ignition’s introduction in 2007, the competition was a sell-out, two weeks before play day.
“We had six new teams enter Ignition this year, meaning a similar number missed out. With those teams wait-listed and
keen to join next year we might need to look at running two Ignitions,” says Kevin Goldsbury, Ignite Sport Trust
Coordinator.
“Our vision at Ignite Sport is to inspire young people and impact communities through sport. Ignition is one way we
encourage a positive participation in sport. We love the opportunity Ignition gives people to connect, play new sports
together, workout and have a great afternoon of fun,” he says.
Kevin says the tournament is also a great team building event for any group.
“Teams will have to enter early in 2015 if they don’t want to miss out,” he adds.
